Stage for Tussar Weavers

Updated: Jun 20, 2021

The state of Jharkhand is famous for ‘Tussar sericulture' and the production of the highest Tussar silk in India. We got the opportunity to visit and connect with Handloom and Handicrafts Directorate at Saraikela in Jharkhand. This state department works towards promoting post cocoon sericulture activities – cocoon to fabric for livelihood enhancement of rural and tribal population. There are designated chambers where the complete manufacturing process is undertaken by skilled workers.

With the rapid evolution in culture and social trends, the rawness and hard work of Tussar silk weavers were seen to die out. To acknowledge the local art and culture of Jharkhand, we purchased some Tussar silk sarees, wallets, mulberry tops, cushions, and other lifestyle products to further sell them at famous commercial centers in Delhi like Delhi Haat.

Customers loved the rich coarse texture which reflected the exotic and untamed spirit of the wild silkworm producing it, in its feel, colour, and sheen. Contemporary designs with striped or geometric patterns became very quite popular among the visitors. This was just a small initiative to help the weavers create their own identity and gain regard for their exquisite artisanship in handloom. We aim to encourage these artisans by helping them stage their hard work at various national and international fairs.
